I am using Ark Linux 2008.1 with KDE 3.5.9. When I first purchased this Fuze, I bought it for the Linux support. It worked quite well with the USB Mode set to Auto-Detect. However, it no longer shows up on my desktop; in fact, the Fuze doesn’t seem to know it’s connected to a computer. It charges, but lets me operate it as if it weren’t plugged in to the computer. I’ve tried plugging it in under MSC mode and MTP mode (I understand that MSC is the recommended for Linux?). Also, it doesn’t show up on the desktop or in my /etc/fstab file. In addition, when I do a dmesg from a terminal, it does not seem to show a MP3 player or flash drive being connected, which I find odd because every MP3 player that I’ve connected to any Linux distro has always shown up as a flash drive.
I recently found out about the new 1.01.15 firmware, and I’d like to be able to upgrade because I’m a BIG fan of Ogg Vorbis and I’ve already ripped all my CDs into Ogg Vorbis format, but I can’t do this unless I can get it to recognize that it is connected to the computer.
I did some testing on my computer and found out that it wasn’t loading the USB drivers. Manually doing a ‘modprobe echi_hcd && modprobe uhci_hcd’ fixed the problem.
I’ve been having similar problems with Ubuntu 8.04 with MSC mode (I don’t know if MTP makes a difference). I currently have a script which does:
sudo rmmod ehci_hcd
sudo modprobe ehci_hcd
but that doesn’t seem to work always, and sometimes freezes the PC’s USB mouse/keyboard for 30 seconds. Is Ubuntu 8.10 any better or any other solutions? I’m currently using firmware 1.01.11 due to the popping-noise-with-backlight-off bug in .15, but I had the same problem in .15 anyway.
Ubuntu never worked for me for some reason. Loads of problems with it. I can elaborate if you want me to, but I’d recommend trying with a different distro. If it still gives the same problem, then Ubuntu (surprisingly) would not be the problem.
modprobe-ing for ehci_hcd and uhci_hcd lags my computer for only two or three seconds. Also, if the USB mouse and keyboard are working before you modprobe for ehci_hcd and uhci_hcd, then they should already be loaded as these are your USB drivers (or at least they are on my computer). This would be the reason that the keyboard and mouse freeze, because it’s loading the USB drivers on top of themselves.
As for this popping noise with the backlight off, I’ve never had this issue with 1.01.15. Maybe there’s a problem with your headphones?

I don’t fancy changing distro right now, so I’ll see if I can get an improvement with Ubuntu. The ‘popping’ problem is a well-documented known problem with .15.
I’m using kernel 2.6.27-9-generic with KDE4 and I’m having this issue as well. The player showed up when I first got it, and I loaded it with music, and now when I plug it in it just charges and keeps playing music. I manually changed the USB mode, and ran the mod probe commands as well.
Is there a MTP Trick to force the player into MTP mode like with the view and e200? I tried switching it off, then back on and putting it to hold then holding left button as it was starting up but the best I could do is get it to refresh the database. I never got it into MTP mode.
Still not getting anywhere on this. I managed to, out of nowhere, get the device to go into MSC mode and say it was connected yesterday.. but it didn't show up on my computer at all. I'm using Intrepid Ibex 8.10, with KDE 4.1 and Kernel 6.6.27-9 generic. Here's some debugging information:

I have the same problem the linux user had, however I am using windows xp. Do you have any ideas on how to fix the problem for windows. It used to work fine on my computer, and actually my daughter has a 4GB sansa fuze and it still works fine on my laptop. It is just my 8GB which is acting up now.

Ok Have you tried the different usb mode setings? What Service pack on XP? Do you mean that it wont show up in your “My Computer” window? XP does not “Mount” Like Lunix or Mac Operating systems.
