Fuze / iPod connectors incompatability question

I know that plugging Fuzes into iPod docks is a big no-no and can result in serious damage to the Fuze. But is this the same with iPods in Fuze docks? Is there a real risk of damage, or will it just not work?

Only asking, as my daughter has a Fuze and Griffin Powerdock connected to her stereo. An iPod using friend stayed over recently, so I made a point of telling them both not to try to plug iPods in! Do I need to go through this health and safety talk with all her friends or can I just be confident that no iPods will be harmed when trying to use a superior MP3 system?

I don’t know if anyone has done the experiment, but since they’re not going to work in the dock anyway, there’s no point in plugging them in.

Why not just tell your daughter to tell her friends that?  Or put a little No iPods! sign on the dock.

Also remind your daughter she’s ultra cool for not having what everyone else has.

The really big issue is the FireWire 12 volt  power there, among other things.  I wish the 30-pin connectors were a little more different between Sansa and Apple, in particular, the edge tabs.

Since we’re wishing, I’d wish both would use a standard connector like mini-usb.

That would be the Clip +.

I wouldn’t ever expect Apple to use something standard.

Agreed… Apple is king of proprietary connectors/software/hardware… though when they went to intel processors it did give some of us some hope

Good post.

That the Fuze use the same connector type as the iPod isn’t coincidental. All of these MP3 types come from a few ODMs contracted for the task, and using the same connector as the predominant brand saves on the considerable cost of creating new fabrication tools.

OTOH, I’ll bet that many of the Fuze’s “it’s dead” problems stem from peeps plugging it into iPod cables/docks, so there is a downside in terms of returns & tech support cost.
