When I attach me e260 v1 to my windows 7 64 bit machine in MTP mode, the computer tries to install a driver but can’t. The player shows up in devices under “Other” and it cannot be accessed. My son has another computer running the same operating system and my sansa is immediately recognized on his computer.
When I attach in MSC mode, the sansa is recognized but I am told I have to format it before the first use. I don’t want to do that since it is 40% full of music.
There shouldn’t be any reason why you would need to format the player in order to connect in MSC mode; is Win 7 giving you this message?
Worst case scenario . . . the player is only 4GB; if it’s 40% full and you have to re-format it you’re only talking about re-loading less than 2Gb worth of music. That shouldn’t take more than 15-30 minutes.
But, I wouldn’t just let Win 7 format it. The v1 models should be formatted by using the blank folder/file re-named ‘sansa.fmt’ (without quotes) in Recovery Mode method. Do a search here; there’s plenty of details and directions.

e200 series v1 players work best in MSC mode unless you are using CRhapsody or other DRM-crippled content, so I’d forget about MTP unless you have to.

When I try to acces the sansa in explorer, windows says it has to be formatted. Unfortunately, the music on the sansa is my only copy so wanted to copy it onto my computer, but cannot access it.
