Does my Passport require more power when it has more data?

I have a My Passport 640 GB and my PC has 2 front USB ports. I used to use the other port for printer/camera while using Passport. However, after it gets more data (it has more than 200G now), I couldn’t use both USB ports now. If I connect to another device while using My Passport, it will make a clicking sound every several seconds and my PC doesn’t recognize it anymore.

I used to connect it to my dell laptop as well. After I noticed the problem with PC, I tried with my laptop and it doesn’t recognize My Passport anymore (while no other usb devices connected)

Actually NO , however try to make sure that your Computer is Providing Enough Power …

If you have a Usb port in the back of the computer i will suggest you to connect the unit to that Port …

Besides that in Windows Xp /Vista / 7 You Can Go to device manager to check the power Settings for this usb Drives :

Right Click in My Computer / Computer , >Manage >Device manager >Usb Serial bus Controllers > Usb Root Hub >Right Click in the usb root hub and go to >Properties >Power Management , then You will Find that it says ''ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THE DEVICE ‘’ If thats checked please uncheck it … and do the same process with all Root HUBS  , that will make the usb Hard drive to get enough power and work properly

Hope it Helps

You might want to download and run our DLG Diagnostic utility to make sure that the drive is okay.  Clicking means only one of two things, the drive is failing/failed, or it’s not getting enough power.  You can purchase a power booster cable from either the wd online store, or through tech support.  If the drive is not showing up on other computers, as well, then it’s likely failing.  However, look in Disk Management to see if the Passport is there when it doesn’t show up.  And, make sure that your laptop has the power adapter connected when connecting the Passport.
