My Fuze says (correctly) that I have 1391 songs, but my Thinkpad (XP SP III ) sees only about 650 of them. (I have an 8GB HC card too, total 16GB - the songs there are seen by both computers, curiously)
My Mac sees about 300 of them.
So, with thanks to those who pointed out that my “Freeze” problem on “delete song” was not going to go away, my problem is – I can’t delete the unwanted song(s) from the computer, either, because the computer doesn’t see them.
I’ve tried all 3 “USB Settings” and get the same results.
Advice appreciated! Solutions applauded!

Here are responses to my eralier post on “delete freeze”:
>>Until they get this sorted out in a future f/w update, just delete files via your computer. And yes, they know about it and are working on it.<<
>>The delete function is pretty useless because of that freeze. I use the rating system to keep track of what I want to delete, then delete music from the Fuze when its attached to the computer.<<
I find it hard to believe that the pc sees the same number of songs in both MSC and MTP modes. The songs transferred in MTP mode show up on the player on the pc when connected in MTP mode, and those transferred in MSC mode show up when connected in MSC mode. If you can’t solve this, then just format the player via the player’s menu, choose MSC or MTP mode and stick with it. As for the files on the card, since the mac sees them they are in msc mode.
Auto Picks the best way for your fuze to connect to the Computer, As I recall on PC it usually Chooses MTP. This is the setting Many of us leave the fuze in regardless.
Auto could connect in MTP or MSC. Imo the auto setting doesn’t make sense, as it could result in someone having some music transferred in MTP and some in MSC which is what you are experiencing. Make sure you have the music that is in your player also on your pc, then format the player via its menu. Choose the MTP or MSC setting for USB mode. MTP is needed for transferring protected music, or syncing your player with Windows Media Player or other media players. Dragging and dropping files to the player via Windows Explorer can be done in either MTP or MSC mode.
Apparently I have loaded about 1500 songs now onto an 8GGB Fuze in the following manners:
– from MAC (my media computer, where iTunes resides)
– from my Thinkpad laptop, where it’s easy to burn CD’s while I work, in (apparently) all three “USB Mode” settings: Autodetect, MTP, MSC.
Background: I intended to use the Fuze to audition the songs (many CD’s worth) and to delete easily those I didn’t want to keep on the unit (I have 2000 CD’s, I used to review them and got truckloads).
Well, Now we have agreed that “delete” takes about 90 seconds per song until the springtime firmware update ("If winter comes, can spring be far behind …?).
So, I figger I’ll try to delete them from the Fuze from the computer.
But each computer sees only those songs loaded from that computer (Mac or PC), and the PC sees only the songsvisible in MTP or MSC, one at a time, never together.
So:
Action Item: How can I get ALL of the songs off the Fuze, reformat the Fuze, and put them all back on in one format (MTP or MSC??), being assured that I haven’t lost any of them? And what about the Mac songs?
Many thanks. As the Beatles used to say, “We can work it out.” (But I don’t have that song yet.)

First decide if you want to stick with MTP or MSC. The MAC needs to connect via MSC so I suggest using that, however MSC won’t work with Windows Media player or transferring protected files to the player, which requires MTP. Create a folder in a convenient place on your pc(perhaps the desktop?). Connect the player in the USB you plan not to use in the future. Copy the files you see on the player on your pc to this folder. Delete the files you see on the player on your pc. Disconnect the player then switch to the USB mode you plan to keep. Reconnect the player then copy all the files you stored on the pc in the set aside folder to the player.
