Can't initialize my 4TB WD Red

Hi there,

It’s the first time this is happening to me and I bought several of these.

I first initialized the disk (I thought I had) and did the usual quick format. This is where problems started. The format just kept on running when it is usually almost an instant thing. I tried to cancel the format but it was not responsive. I ended up just shutting down the bay where the disk was inserted.

When I tried again, I went do disk management, and the disk is shown as not initialized. When I tried to do it again I got this error message:

"Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

I searched a bit online and there was some advice about using chkdsk but you need a “letter” attributed to the disk and it doesn’t have one. Disk management just says it’s disk number X.

This is a brand new disk… Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

The Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is basically a data verification method that detects accidental changes to raw data residing in the storage media. The CRC error occurs due to hard drive corruption, misconfigured files, registry file corruption, cluttered disk, unsuccessful program installation, or when there’s a bad spot on the storage media. CRC error is also a serious issue that must be resolved as soon as possible to avoid system failure and data loss.

Here are few methods to fix the Cyclic Redundancy Check error:

  1. Run CHKDSK Utility Scan
  2. Run SFC Scan
  3. Use a data recovery tool

Further, I suggest you to check the below link for more detailed process to fix the error issue: https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to-fix-cyclic-redundancy-check-data-error/

Hope it will help!
