I have spent the better part of today loading, upgrading, and attempting to get this new drive to work across all of my devices. After much patience, I finally got it to work on my Android tablet, and actually copied some photos across. However when it comes to the PC (Windows 10 ), I have had no end of trouble. The only way I can access the drive is by using the IP address in a web browser. Other instructions do not work. ![]()
Now when I try to find the drive using Windows Explorer, I can only find it by clicking on ‘This PC’, and then it will only allow me to view the files and nothing else. How do you create folders on the drive, and more importantly, how do you copy / move files to the drive? I have read the manual, but very little of it actually corresponds with a Windows 10 PC.![]()
The MPW is also a “drive” you can connect to a PC. I never transfer data to and from the MPW, wirelessly. I connect it to the PC’s USB, and treat it like any other drive, meaning I find it in Windows file explorer and either copy stuff from PC to drive or occasionally copy from MPW to PC. I have done large data dumps from PC to MPW often; especially if just setting things up. It is that plain simple!
Hi Mike 27oct, Thank you for your reply. I did find after posting this issue, that by connecting directly,I was able to transfer files, and create folders etc. as you mention.
I’ma little confused with you comment about never transferring files wirelessly. How do you connect your mobile devices, and transfer files from them? I’m looking mainly at photos from phones, and docs from tablets. Should I be transferring them to the PC first, then onto the MPW? It kinda defeats the purpose of having a wireless drive doesn’t it?
Guess we need to define 'transfer: I man copy files.
I wirelessly STREAM music and video all the time from MPW using the My Cloud app (and others), but that is not called transferring; it is called streaming.
If you do not have the complete User Manual for your model Wireless Passport, then locate it in the MPW original folders or download it from WD Support.
I actually have downloaded the full manual, but as mentioned, it isn’t written for Win10. A lot of the steps and information doesn’t relate to what I get on my PC.
I might take some time and explain what I require of this device (MPW). I currently live in a 5th wheeler,
and am constantly travelling around Australia. I have my home office set up onboard. I do quite a few site safety audits (using an Android tablet) and require a backup system for these reports. Due to the fact that living in a mobile situation doesn’t allow for mains power to be available all the time, I have purchased all office devices that are powered via either 12vdc or USB or rechargable battery. My PC is a Microsoft Surface 3 (upgraded to Win10), My printer is a HP Officejet 150 mobile, and I use a wireless broadband for internet. All devices run on either battery or are charged via 12vdc or a USB port. I chose the MPW over a standard external HDD due to the fact that I believed I could back up the data on my tablet and phone, without having to connect them to my PC. According to the manual, this is possible, but I just seem to be having a few teething problems setting it up. ![]()
I daresay, that the more I play with the device, the more I will get to understand it, and it works with my setup. ![]()
Thanks once again for your advice.
