Sorry if this is discussed in an another topic my search didn’t turn up any results.
My question is 2 folds, first in windows explorer (I’m currently using windows 10) I can only see the videos, photos and music folders not the ‘Other’ folder and this is where I’m guessing all my working files are located. Is there a way to see it/locate it?
Second is there a way to change this way of filing? I file everything I want for a project in one file, so it will have photos, videos, word docs, PSD files etc all in the one folder, but with the way the Passport files when connected to it wirelessly, the videos, photos and music folders, I have to go into them then navigate to the folder I want and then in the folder it only shows the items of that type (in the video folder it only shows the videos in the folder not all the items). I find this a really clunky way of working and not helpful. when I plug my Passport into the USB port it comes up with all the files the way I saved them on there originally in the project folders is there a way to get this view when connecting wirelessly?
I am thinking about a solution/workaround but not ready to post just yet, so check back later for my next reply.
Meanwhile, I need more info:
Which MPW do you have – the original or the newer MPW Pro?
Are you connecting directly to the MPW wireless signal from a PC, or areyou using the My Cloud app?
Also, have you connected the MPW signal to your wireless networ signa?
Are you connecting at work or from home, or both?
Do you have the complete user manual; that you have on the drive or downloaded from WD Support. You need this full manual for reference.
Your post was interesting to me so I decided to take it on as I was curious about the situation. I have some comments and solutions to pass on, but before I spend the time to write it all up, I am waiting for a reply from you.
Meanwhile, about the “Other” folder. We users don’t know what all is in it, because we cannot look in it – for good reasons, but we are pretty sure it contains the drive’s operating system and other things WD does not want users to mess with. So, just ignore it. On a WD NAS, it tends to grow in storage used as the owner installs approved apps on the NAS, such as a large storage “hog” app like the PLEX program.
Next, I believe the MPW is designed mostly for media storage as well as serving it up, and mine is chock full of music, video and photo files. I then can access the MPW to view and listen to this media using the My Cloud app and other appropriate apps on our iPads and iPhones. I basically have no other files on the MPW, but I do have a PDF or two, and when I click on them I can read them from the apps AND WIRELESSLY from files using Win File Explorer of the PC, Essentially, I can access ALL the files on MPW using File Explorer with no problems.
A lot of this has to do with how the MPW is setup. More on that later.
its a ‘My Passport Wireless’ not a ‘Pro’. It is brand new I only bought it from the store the other day but I can’t see on the box anywhere what generation it is.
I still have all the files on the WD that it came with, but I used what looks like the quick starter guide when I set it up. I’m not using the MyCloud App I connect to the My Passport wireless network (http://mypassport) and connect that to my internet connection so I can use both at the same time. I probably should of researched it more to see that it was more for media playing. I own 2 older WD drives that have be trusty through out the years an still work solidly, so when I wanted a small package wireless solution on the go it seemed logical to jump from a ‘WD My Passport’ to the ‘WD My Passport Wireless’. It did read how you could use it for work and connect it to clients computers wirelessly, I assumed you could show them their working files not just my awesome music collection.
It would be great if I could see in files in Win Files Explorer the way they were copied on to the hard drive but I only see the video, photos music folders so I cant access any other files at all. (unless I plug it in via USB)
I’m currently connecting at home, but next week I go back to work and would like to be able to use it copy files back and forth to make life easier when I work from home.
Since I used the quick start guide to setting up because that’s all that was in the box maybe I’ve missed something there, I will take a look at the full manual.
Hi, thanks for the reply. It is very late here on the US West coast, so a very quick comment until next time. Connect the MPW to your PC, look in the folders and find one called User Manuals, open it and find the English one, copy it and then paste it on your desktop (so you don’t have to go get it again) and open it up on the desktop. It will keep you busy for a while!
I am pretty sure we can get you up and running like you want to be. Later, Mike
Thanks, I’ll have a read when I get home tomorrow afternoon and see if there info in there that can help!! I’m in Sydney so I think we are on opposite times, lol. I’ll write back once I’ve read though.
thanks for the info, I’ll take a look when I get home from work tomorrow to see where I can see it in file explorer and which network I’m on and get back to you.
