Hi, this is my first post here, and I apologize if the questions seems to be a bit inappropriate.
About 3 years ago, I’ve bought a 250 GB My Book Essential external hard drive. The drive worked flawlessly till a couple of months ago, when its write speed fell down to 1 MB/s. After several attempts to fix the problem, me and my friend concluded that the hard drive has began to break down (mostly likely because of bad sectors).
My question is a bit odd. Is it possible to replace the hard drive with another WD hard drive or does it have to be the same model that was installed in the My Book?
I’m not sure but I think it would have to be the same model. In all honesty it may be as cheap buying a new external. Just be warned that the Smartware included is junk and it’s on a Virtual CD that you cannot delete. Check the posts here personally I’d pick something that didn’t have the Smartware ■■■■ on it.
The model in question is WD2500C032. It only has a green LED indicator for power satus (no power button, no gauges for capacity). The softwer that I received was Google Desktop search and a program for formating, and there was no hidden partition. So, I think that it has no Smartware.
The reason why I am asking this question is if will the controller accept the new hard drive?
