I know it ships with 5600 rpm drives (Hitachi 5k4000 from what I can find elsewhere… WD doesn’t seem to want to list that spec anywhere), but can it handle 7200 RPM drives? Mostly worried about additional heat from the faster drives.
The WD Thunderbolt Duo was designed to work with the WD Green line of disk drives. Other models may not work at all.
Hmmm, that’s what I was afraid of. Putting slower drives in a thunderbolt enclosure kind of defeats the purpose of a fast interface. So does the My Book thunderbolt Duo use WD 4TB Green drives or the Hitachi 5K4000 drives that I’ve seen mentioned in reviews? I was hoping to use the included slower drives as offsite backups and use faster WD 4TB Black drives for daily use.
The disk drives will depend on the production date and generation of the WD My Book Thunderbolt Duo. On the other hand, I would recommend the WD My Book VelociRaptor Duo as it uses 10k RPM units.
Unfortunately, I really need the 8TB of storage, so the Velociraptor won’t work. Thanks for the info.
