Windows 10 WD 0830 USB 3.0 Device Not Ready

I am using a Passport Ultra 2TB which works fine in Windows 7 & 8.1 but on Windows 10 I keep getting the device not ready message.
It shows the drive letter but any time I try to open I get “device not ready”. I also cannot assign any other drive letter or remove a drive letter.

Steps I have taken so far:
I have tried uninstalling the drivers in device manager to no avail, tried in different USB ports USB 3.0 & 2.0, I bought a new short cable last week from WD but this did not change anything.
I reinstalled windows 10 which does work initially but after upgrading Windows 10 through windows update went back to device not ready.
I have now went back to windows 8.1 for now as this works well.

Any ideas on this or has anyone else encountered this issue with windows 10?

Hello,

Make sure your Windows 10 computer has all the windows updates installed. Especially any update regarding USB ports.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
There are no updates left to install. After updating from initial Windows 10 to 10586.218 update afterwards I got the device not ready.

One other thing I did notice and this applies to other OS is that when I first plug-in the HDD for the first time into a new computer I have to give a drive letter manually in the disk manager then it works with windows 7 & 8.1. However doesn’t apply in Windows 10. I can give it a drive letter for the first instance then afterwards I get device is not ready but cannot change driver letter again.
The drive also shows as healthy in disk manager but where you see the format like NTFS it is blank like it has no format, but it is not in RAW. It has really baffled me as well as the computer.

I have the same problem. Has this problem been solved?
