Hi, I’m glad to read that you were able to solve your issue. Mark the post which contains the solution so any users that might be having that question will be able to find it.

FYI, WD formats its drives intended to be used on both platforms as exFAT, Example product: WD My Passport Wireless; a hard drive for both platforms.

Your choice depends on whether you plan to use the hard drive more frequently on a Windows PC or a Mac.

  1. exFAT (Best for Cross-Platform Flexibility): If you plan to use your WD external drive on both Mac and Windows but aren’t sure which platform you will use more, choose exFAT. Both PCs and Macs offer native read and write support for exFAT without requiring extra tools. It also has no individual file size limits, making it ideal for large files like games, program installers, and HD videos.

  2. NTFS (Best for Windows-Heavy Users): If you are a heavy Windows user, choose NTFS. NTFS offers excellent data protection and performance on Windows, but Macs can only read files from it by default. If necessary, you can use a third-party driver like iBoysoft NTFS for Mac to safely write files from a Mac to an NTFS drive—allowing you to copy, modify, or delete files.

  3. FAT32 (Older Alternative): FAT32 works on both operating systems, as well as almost all portable devices and smart TVs. However, it cannot store any single file larger than 4 GB. For instance, if you try to move a 6 GB file to a FAT32-formatted hard drive, you will encounter the error: “The file is too large for the destination file system.”

  4. APFS or Mac OS Extended(Avoid for Mixed Environments): You should avoid APFS and Mac OS Extended unless you plan to use the drive exclusively on Apple devices. Windows cannot read or write to these formats without expensive, paid third-party software.
