WD smart drive won't install on my new Mac Pro

Hi all, I’ve been backing up my iMac content for years on a WD Passport external drive and now when I try to use it on my new MacBook it won’t work!, I can read the files through My passport icon but the Smartware app won’t install. Any thoughts? (As I need to recover part of the content on my new MacBook)

Thanks

Are you using the latest version of SmartWare for Mac? Is your OS supported?

or

Thanks for your reply… I bought this WD drive 10 years ago and it always have worked for the iMac… do you mean I need to the update the actual WD drive with latest version? How do I do that?

You would download it from the link above and install.

However, if this is a new iMac check the version of the OS first and make sure it is compatible - I thought they ended mac support for the software (since macOS comes with Time Machine now) some time back. The supported versions are on the downloads page.

Also, please keep in mind that hard drives usually don’t last 10 years (they can, and yours could conceivably last for quite some time but the average is less than that based on information from Google)- I would consider upgrading to a newer model and making sure you have a second copy of any important data.

Great thanks… very useful info.
Although the smart-ware window opened and recognised the hard drive; I got stuck on the retrieving step (is not listing the staff/volumes baked up I have in there) I guess because of what you said about this OS Sierra on my new MacBook not supporting the WD update I just run.

I guess the other Option I have is using time
Machine on my old iMac (not sure if that would work/screen is not Great and also I am it not sure if snow Leopard supports that). Anyway; if that works, I can the save the staff in time machine and retrieve it from my new MacBook?
