WD Passport cannot find folders saved on desktop - please help

I purchased a 1TB My Passport external hard drive(brand new) a week ago. After installing the WD Apps and updating the software and firmware I proceeded to create the back up. As I only need to back up particular folders on my desktop, I proceeded with the instructions for Backing up files or folders—file backup using the WD SmartWare software.

In the ‘backup by files’ selection box, I tried to access folders on my desktop saved on my computer under  .C:\Users\Tanya\Desktop. However under the selection box (WD SmartWare), when I click on Local Disk C: > Users, the Users folder is empty. Clicking on ‘>Users’ does not provide further drop down options to select desktop. Using windows explorer, I can defintely see that the folders that I need to access are in the subfolder that is my username under the folder ‘Users’. I am logged in as administrator and am running Windows Vista.

Please can you help me access the folders on my desktop so that I can point WD Passport to back these up?

Thanks

Hi, that’s weird, in my case when I go to C:\Users using Smartware, I see all of the PC profiles. Are you sure you are clicking on the small triangle on the left side of the folder to expand it?

Hi Alucardx23

Thanks for your reply. Is that on Vista? My issue seems to only occur on one of my laptops running Vista. The other that is running Windows 7 works fine. I have tried countless times clicking on the small triangle which turns to point right but does not expand :(. I have tried waiting for hours to see whether there was a delay in loading it but to no avail.

I was wondering whether it was something to do with permissions but I am always logged on as administrator and have tried changing the permissions on the folders to allow full control and access but this has not made any difference.

I am getting a little desparate as I have purchased a product that I cannot use.

I have logged a case with WD support but have had no response one week later. I am at work during the hours they operate telephone support and so cannot call.

Any ideas how I can make it work?

Thanks

I have Windows 7, so you’re right, it could be something with vista :confounded:. When you select the option to do a category backup, does smartware recognizes the files in the computer? Something that you can try if you haven’t, is making sure that you have the latest smartware version installed. Check the link below.

I have kept the software updated and also installed the most recent one issued a few days ago, version 1.6.4 but none of this has helped. I have also carried out all the Windows Vista updates.

Still no joy from western digital support.
