WD Passport 500gb visible but not readable. seems to be running test.exe, Win7

My 2 yo 500gb passport is visible as Drive E: (Toshiba laptop, Win7 64bit) I can’t access the properites, and when I try to view files explorer stops responding. WinDlg will not run when drive is plugged in. Works fine for my 1TB drive. Any ideas?

Hello and welcome, 

Try using another USB cable, be sure to connect the USB cable that came bundled with the Passport directly to the PC.

Yes, tried that. The activity light on the drive is always on, and sometimes blinking, but I’m not able to view any files. Sometimes a msg comes up saying I need to format the drive. When I right click & try to access the properties nothing happens.

It is possible that the files in your Passport are corrupted, if you need to recover your files you can try using a data recovery software, using Google you should be able to find several options. If that doesn’t work you can contact a professional data recovery company. Check the link below for more information.
