i managed to back up all my files on a brand new passport 2tb - then suddenly it wasnt visible on the macbook any more. to see it again, i had to restart the computer twice. it works in the television however. it is formatted to work on both pc and mac platforms. so it seems to be intermittent. i run mountain lion still - my 2008 macbook can’t update to mavericks (so apple tell me). i see it is a problem with a lot of people - something WD is addressing hopefully! Has anyone else had the same problem?

Try some basic troubleshooting.
If the drive is not seen when you connect it to your computer please try:
1- Disconnect the drive from the computer and restart the computer.
2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the computer, not through a hub).
3- Go to "Disk Utility” to verify if the drive shows up there.
If the drive shows up in disk utility but it is not seen on Computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.
