Wd my passport for mac drive is not found on myolder macbook pro....but works fine on my newer macbook pro?

My Passport for Mac (2 TB drive) is not recognized on my older MAcBook Pro.
Light comes on but does not blink
disk utility does not see the drive
tried changing cables, to no avail
I tried a thumb drive in the USB port…the port appears to work fine, it recognized the thumb drive

however,… the MyPassport for mac drive works fine on my newer macbook pro
Any Suggestions???

mac OSX el capitan on both machines
