WD My Passport 750 - very slow, can't read/write/transfer files

Hi guys,

I have portable drive My Passport Essential with product number  WDBACX7500ABL - 00. It’s with a capacity of  750 GB. It works fine, when it comes to noises and connecting to a PC. I don’t have problems here - recognized and connected everytime. But it can’t read files, that are already on it - it freezes and then it even freezes my computer. That happens on all computers I tried with (5-6 with win 7, and one with win XP SP2). Also it reads/writes/transfers files very slow, and it freezes sometimes, so i need to unplug it and make everything one more time till i have a succesfull attempt. It also doesn’t read files -  i have pictures on it. I can see the thumbnails, but when i try to open one it just freezes. I have no more than 20 GB on it now, but the backups take about 350 GB of it!!! (I use at most 200 GB of it, but i delete the files once successfully transfered). Also when i try to delete the backups it freezes. The best way to transfer/delete files is one by one, when they are big or at 4-5GB portions maximum, if I don’t want it to freeze. Today i needed 1h to write 6 GB of files on it (total of no more than 10 files, all of them videos).

My question is : Is this normal, can i do something to try to fix it? When now, what options do I have to get i changed? What reason do I have to choose from the dropdown list? It’s in limited warranty or something like this till 08/20/2013.I bought it from Bulgaria (bot sure if I keep documents about it), but I’m currently based in Austria. Can i change it in Austria or i should wait till I go back to Bulgaria? The drive itself is not broken, it was kept in a WD case from the very first minute. It has only normal scratches on it from use mainy on the back of it. I see it’s still an actual product, even there are some new colours. Can I also get a different one if replaced, or I will get the very same colour?

With best regards,

Valentin

Dad sounds like a data corruption problem, if you need to recover all your files, you can try with a data recovery program like recuva or teskdisk, after that you can reformat the passport again and it should work fine. Check the link below for the steps to format it.

Hi,  iam also having the same problem with “My Passport” external hard drive. I tried formatting it in the same procedure. But it is troubling the same. No change.

Iam able to copy the files to “My Passport” but not able to read or play or copy back any files.

Please help me to fix it.

Thank you for the fast answer Alucardx23,

unfortunately the situation is the same, again freezes everything. Could please please answer to me to the question from the first post?

1.What reason is the best to option when filling the RMA form?

2.Do i have to keep some documents, I could i recieve (and return the one i own at the moment) in another country? (Bought from Bulgaria, based in Austria)

3.Is there the possibility to choose another colour?
