Hello,

I got a 1tb external hd resently. Like this one    http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Portable-External-Drive-Storage/dp/B006Y5UV4A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1358012436&sr=8-2&keywords=1+tb+western+digital

from time to time if my computer is restarted the drive doesnt show up in my computer until i discconect and reconnect the usb cable. I have another 500 gig passport that works w/ no problems at all.

anyone have any suggestions?

Check if you have the latest USB 3.0 drivers for your computer, also try connecting the passport directly to a USB port on the PC if you are not.
