WD My Book Essential 2tb usb 3.0 removed from External Case

hi Guys,

I bought the above external hardrive fro my media centre and copied all the movies and tv shows to it. Over 1 tb of stuff.

I was told my the bro in law that I can remove the sata hard drive from the casing and throw it in the desktop computer (media centre) which I did, but it wouldnt recognise it in the directory.  It installs and say that the new hardware is installed and ready to be used but it says that it is unsupported.

Problem is that it wont even show up when connected to a different computer and I need to retrieve all the files off it.  I have reinstalled the driver for it on my media centre desktop to see if that makes a difference but no good.

Any tips on what I can do next?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

I should mention that when I go into Disk Management it shows up as 1862.98 GB Unallocated.

Why and how do I fix it show I can get back over 500 movies and TV Shows i have loaded onto it?

Thanks

UNALLOCATED means that the drive does not have a partition therefore the files are gone :frowning:

You can try data recovery software to retrieve some of it (google for data recovery software) to see if this helps.

You shouldn’t take the unit ou of the enclosure in the first place (unless it was defective).

If the drive came with Smartware the data will be encrypted by the circuit board with the USB port on it. The only way to use as internal would be to reformat and write zeroes to it. Try putting it back in case and use it the way it was intended and see if it works then.
