WD Elements prevents PC from shotdown

My new WD Elements 6TB prevents my desktop from shutdown/restart. PC begins to restart process but then hangs on without doing anything. I tried different USB ports on the PC but didn’t help.

Any idea why?

Didn’t help. Something holds the disk busy. I think that’s why the PC cannot restart. I have no idea what it is. I have other external disks that works fine in this manner.

ps. this is a very old issue about WD disks. I have found exactly the same complaints from different customers in year 2012:

To fix the issue with your WD Elements 6TB drive, try these steps:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers via Device Manager.
  2. Disable Fast Startup in Power Options settings.
  3. Adjust power settings to prevent USB devices from being turned off.
  4. Test by disconnecting the drive and restarting your PC.
  5. Check for related errors in Event Viewer under “Windows Logs > System.”
