I have an external drive of recent manufacture from another company I received when I took a new position in the office. Can I continue to use the WD with the other drive or does the backup software only work with WD drives ?

WD Backup software works with WD drive only. It may not work with another hard drive. I would suggest to use WD Drive with WD backup software for better results and performance.
