Hi, does anyone know if WD Anywhere Backup Premium version 4.50.6554 is compatible with windows 8?
Nope, not officially.Â
Has anyone have it working under windows 8? if it works, good enough for me.
I tried to install using the latest software I downloaded from the support section for My Book World Edition.

WD Discovery works fine, but WD Anywhere Backup can’t be launched. You get the following message : WD Launcher can’t be executed on this Windows version. (in French it was : WD Launcher ne peut pas être exécuté sur cette version de Windows)

I downloaded the new link software. This worked but from time to time connection is lost. WD backup software is not compatible with windows 8. Does anyone know if an update is coming soon?
I have used the WD Anywhere software on my system for the last 4 or 5 years, and since upgrading my computer from Win 7 to 8, I am also getting the incompatibiity error when attempting to launch. I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps, with no success, and now faced with either manually copying files over to my Backup drives (hassle) and hope that an Anywhere upgrade for win 8 is shortly forthcoming, or chucking that Anywhere software and start using a competitor’s product from a more reliable vendor. This experience leaves me feeling disappointed, and certainly does not give me the confidence to purchase any more products from WDC if they can’t provide TIMELY support on a necessary Backup utility. It worked under Windows 7. Windows 8 was only an upgrade for me, and everything else worked after the upgrade. Surely that’s a clue! This is the one utility you would want to work after an upgrade!!!. Â
C’mon WD guys, if you are reading this, PLEASE get your act together and provide a Windows 8 compatible upgrade of WD Anywhere Backup.
Thanks in advance
Lindsay
Has anyone tried the windows 8 backup utility?
WD Smartware doesn’t seem to work in Windows 8 either.
WOW! That WAS a venting rant, if I say so myself…
fwiw, it was 3am and I was having issues with all kinds of software after my Win 8 upgrade, and quickly needed access to certain files on my backup! Having WD Anywhere fail on me was the last straw… rule 1, never vent when ya tired…but after sleeping on it, I did some wide-awake troubleshooting and found that the Launcher was the issue, and running the main program in compat mode did fix the problem! So, I’m happy again, and Anywhere Backup works just fine!

Hi Lindsay,
great to hear that you’ve found a solution of sorts for the launcher imcompat issue. Can I ask what steps you took to run it in incomp mode?
Cheers,
Derek
here is the solution :
in : ProgramFiles (x86)/WD/WD Anywhere Backup/
Do not use : MemeoLauncher.exe, it is incompatible with W8
in replacement create a link on your desktop with : MemeoBackup.exe
and modify the apps at start up replacing MemeoLauncher.exe by
MemeoBackup.exe (you can do it with ccleaner for exemple)
Everything works perfectly.
Now when I boot my Windows 8 PC - does anyone know how I can get rid of the message that WD Launcher will not run, please?
- Install the software in Windows 8. I downloaded a copy from WD’s site.
- At the end of install it will attempt to launch and fail. Just click through the error dialog.
- Navigate to the following location:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\WD\WD Anywhere Backup\MemeoBackup.exe”
4. Right click on MemeoBackup.exe and choose Properties.
5. Click on the Compatibility tab.
6. Check the boxes for “Run this program as an administrator” and “Run this program in compatibility mode for:”  and choose Windows 7.
7. Click OK to dismiss the properties dialog.
8. If you want, right click MemeoBackup.exe again and choose Create shortcut. It will prompt you to create one on the desktop.
9. Launch MemeoBackup.exe directly from the application itself by double clicking it, or launch it from the shortcut you created. (Your shortcut should have a little blue and yellow Admin shield icon on it.)
That’s all. Basically all you did here is bypass using the Memeo Launcher which probably has an OS version check with a hard stop if you don’t meet the predetermined supported versions. These steps worked for me. Hope this helps.Â
