WD 1TB Elements won't work on USB 3.0, just fine on 2.0

I have a 1TB USB 3.0 Elements drive, that won’t work on a USB 3.0 port. It has been giving me issues over the past month. Using the supplied cable, it won’t function over any USB 3.0 ports, only USB 2.0 ports. Here is what I have tried.

  1. Multiple USB 3.0 ports (front and rear) on a Dell Desktop – drive will spin, but isn’t recognized by Window 10 or Ubuntu 16.04
  2. Plug it into a USB 2.0 port on the same machine and the drive will function fine with USB 2.0 speeds
  3. Plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on a Lenovo laptop – drive will spin, but isn’t recognized by Windows 10 or Ubuntu 16.04.
  4. Plug it into a USB 2.0 port on the same laptop and the drive will function fine with USB 2.0 speeds
  5. Tried the same steps above with another known good USB 3.0 cable with the same results.

Any ideas on how to get this drive to work on a USB 3.0 port…other than a warranty replacement.

Hi,

Did you try re-installing the USB 3.0 drivers on your computers?

My computer did an update of Windows 10 to the “creators update” version and the problem last night and it seems to have resolved itself.

It was strange that it didn’t work in Linux either, but now once it worked in Windows, I connected it in Linux and it worked there too, now.
