V01.01.22A misbeheaving scrollwheel + OGG and FLAC tracks skipping, both related to backlight off

Hi. My firmware version is V01.01.22A, my previous firmware - I’m not sure (I’ve bought fuze 2 days ago, it was in a new, colorful box, not the navy one). Probably it was either 01.01.07 or 01.01.11 or 01.01.17, but I’m not sure.

I’ve updated the firmware today to 22A and uploaded a few mp3, ogg and flac files (at the same time). I’ve found that fuze changes tracks by itself:

There are two different instances of skipping:

  1. The song is playing, backlight is off, I’m trying to turn the volume up or down. In this case fuze treats wheel rotation as click either to the right or to the left, changing the track. It wasn’t like that when I was playing with fuze before update.

  2. The song in OGG or FLAC format is either playing OR PAUSED (why does it happen when it’s paused?) and the backlight turns itself off (afther that 10 seconds), fuze skips to the next track (and lits the backlight). So the backlight is off for just a quarter of second, then it immedely turns on and I see the next track playing at 0:00 - it’s always the next one, never the previous one.

This is the summary of a sample FLAC file that skips:

File Name : 09 I Like the Boom.flac

File Path : F:\Muzyka\Techmaster P.E.B\09 I Like the Boom.flac

Subsong Index : 0

And here is the summary of a sample OGG file that skips:

File Name : 3 Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Dabruck & Klein remix).ogg

File Path : F:\Muzyka\Transcode_mp4_to_ogg\3 Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Dabruck & Klein remix).ogg

There is one OGG, however, that works just fine

File Name : 06 (Slip & Slide) Suicide.ogg

File Path : F:\Muzyka\Kosheen\Kosheen - Resist\06 (Slip & Slide) Suicide.ogg

Subsong Index : 0

File Size : 3.78MB (3 967 788 bytes)

Sample Rate : 44100 Hz

Channels : 2

Bitrate : 148 kbps

Codec : Vorbis

Encoding : lossy

Tool : Xiph.Org libVorbis I 20070622

<BITRATE_NOMINAL> : 160

Could you please give me a way to get to some other firmware that doesn’t have those bugs? I’d appreciate firmware that supports OGG (FLAC is not necessary).

Please let me know if you need to know more details

Thanks,

 Amadeusz

Update:

I’ve downgraded to 01.01.15a and there is no problem with tracks skipping when backlight goes off. There is still, however, a problem with scrollwheel.

It really bothers me to click on “home” button to lit the backlight up and then change the volume. Furthermore, both in v15 and v22 turn-on button behaves in the same way - it changes the track. So if I’m in a hold mode, and i’m trying to turn it off and push the slider 1mm too far, which happens all the time for me, the song changes.

I’m not experiencing this with Ogg files with 1.01.22A.

Same here.  I use ogg files almost exclusively, and haven’t had my fuze misbehave at all.

Well, now I’ve got v15 and I’ve got oggs working fine,

but there is still an issue that makes the player skip the track on wheel/power-button action when backlight is off. Do you also experience this? I experience it even with sansa’s default songs. It’s pretty annoying not to be able to turn the volume up or to unlock a player without changing a track…

How can I fix it? Is replacing the player the only way?

I can’t answer if it is a player problem or the remedy… I just know that I have the new .22A firmware installed and haven’t had the player skip tracks when using the scroll-wheel or power switch.

I may be barking up the wrong tree, but sometimes players misbehave when there are slight issues with the audio files themselves. There a couple of flavors of the ogg vorbis encoder.  While I have used them both; that may be something to experiment with to see if it makes any difference.  The original ogg codec is oggenc.exe; while there is another one named oggenc2.exe that offers more options and flexibility.  You may want to try to see if there is any difference between the two codecs; and also you may want to try a few different bit-rate settings to see if that makes any difference as well.

The closer you can pin-point what creates an error, the more likely Sandisk can offer a solution.

PS.  I too had difficulty playing the included songs with my fuze successfully.  After a couple of attempts, I just formatted the player and added my own content.  Ever since then, my player has played flawlessly.
