Using WD external USB drive formatted ext3 for backups?

I have an old LaCie external USB drive that I have been using on an old Linux machine that I use as a backup server for the rest of the Linux machines.

The Lacie drive is finally dying and I need a replacement.

I plan to format the new drive ext3, just like the old drive. That should not be a problem.

However, I need a drive that does not spin down. Is there a WD drive that I can use?

My hdparm does not support SCSI drives. I have seen one report of using sdparm (currently not installed) where the standby feature of a Seagate drive was disabled. I also read the WD utilities could turn this off before I reformat.

Has anyone used an external WD drive for Linux where they formatted it ext3 and successfully turned off the spin down? If so, what drive and how did you turn off the spin down.

The Linux machine is an old RHEL3 machine, I don’t really want to mess with the OS on this old machine, other than installing something like sdparm, if that would help.

Hi, i have not tried this nor I have read any information on it, hopefully another user will be able to provide some feedback or information.
