I am using a MyBook Live for several years now, but on one PC I can not uninstall WD Smartware.
This PC was Win7 when WD Smartware was first installed, then upgraded to Win 8 and 8.1 and now to Win 10 and the Anniversary edition of Win 10.
Since Win 8.1, at some point in time it started to send messages that there was an upgrade for Smartware, but I tried several times to install this upgrade, uninstall everything and installing from scratch, but the message of an available update keeps popping up, even today.
I want to get rid of WD Smartware and use Windows File History Backup, but I can not get WD Smartware uninstalled !
WD Smartware (and even WD QuickView) are uninstalled and do not appear in the list of programs in the control panel, but still start up when rebooting.
What steps are you taking to try and uninstall SmartWare? Are you going to the Control Panel and using Programs> Uninstall a Program or, are you just right clicking SmartWare under the list of apps, Western Digital and using that uninstall? See example image of right click below.
I first uninstalled using control panel>Programs>uninstall a program. (uninstalling using right clicking brings me to the same control panel anyway)
I first uninstalled WD Smartware (it is no longer in the list)
After reboot, WD Smartware tried to startup again. Giving a very short error message, but smartware is still mentioned in the Quickview submenu.
Then I tried to uninstall Quickview. but after reboot, Quickview 3.2.4.19 still starts up.
Looking at C:\Program files\Western Digital I still have directories WD Smartware and WD Quick View
WDBackup service is running
