Hello,
Life was going smoothly until lightening struck my DSL line, and fried the motherboard on my Desktop PC. That was a couple weeks ago, so now I have another PC. I had My Passport Ultra hooked up to my previous PC, backing up files regularly, no problem accessing them. I just plugged it into this new PC, and it is asking for my password, and for the life of me, I can’t find it noted down anywhere, and I can’t remember what it could be either. Any suggestions of how I can access my Passport Ultra?
There was a security question, which I can easily answer, but I can’t see how to input that information. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
PS: My Passport Ultra is registered here, and I have a copy of the message acknowledging that, but I was not able to sign in using my e-mail address, which I had to have used when I registered my product.
Thank you,
Sandilew
@Sandilew, If you are using WD Security/WD Unlock the drive
Unlocking the drive without the WD Security software
Whenever a password-protected drive is connected to a computer that does not have the WD Security software installed, it’s possible to use the WD Drive Unlock utility to unlock the drive there. The WD Drive Unlock utility is on a virtual CD (VCD) drive that appears on the desktop display.
- Double-click the WD Unlocker VCD icon and double-click the WD Drive Unlock application on the screen that appears to display the WD Drive Unlock utility screen
- On the WD Drive Unlock utility screen:
- Type the password in the Password box
- Select the Enable auto unlock for this computer… check box if you want the WD Drive Unlock utility to remember the password on this computer
- Click Unlock
The WD security protection is a 256-bit AES encryption, and there is no “forgot password” option to reset the password. if you have forgotten the password, the information stored on the hard drive cannot be retrieved due to the encryption.
Hello Neha_07,
I discovered that after putting in the wrong password too often, it allowed me to delete it, so that is what I did. I simply deleted everything on it. So now it is empty, and I have access to it, and I can back-up files if I wish, but I won’t be password protecting it again. I didn’t bother re-installing the software. I am happy just having it available to use.
Forgive me for not remembering to return, and mention that. I’ve just had so much on my mind, it slipped by until I saw the notification that someone had replied to my query. So thank you very much for taking the time to respond.
Oh, and BTW, I did what you suggested. Can’t figure out how I got to that point, but I do remember it giving me that option to “enable auto unlock for this computer” but it didn’t work. I tried it more than once. That was when I decided to just delete everything on the drive. I had been using it to back up my file history, but I also had another drive backing up weekly, so I was able to recover everything with that.
Take care and have a good day,
Sandie Knapp
