I have exactly the same issue here with my WD Elements SE (WDBPCK0010BBK-01). Regardless the system (Win XP, Win7x64).

  • I have tried updating the drivers (“drivers are up to date”)

  • I have tried replacing the cable (different cable = same sh*t… but maybe BOTH cables are wrong???).

  • I have tried formatting (error)

  • I have tried reinstalling the device (system installed the same drivers, and nothing has changed)

  • I have tried Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool for Windows (the disk PASSES both Quick and Extended tests (!!!) but the test procedure lasts for a fraction of a second and actually 0 clusters are being tested. And one more thing - DLD displays capacity of the disk as “0 GB”)

All those solutions failed. Any other idea?

PS: I have exatly the same situation with WD Passport (WDBBEP0010BRD-01). Both disks started to act like this almost one after another (in the same week). Is it coincidence? Or maybe a virus??

If you Google i/o error you’ll see it’s some how a common issue

replacing the drive is your next option
