I’ve been using a SanDisk SD card with my Canon camera for quite a while, and it has always worked fine. However, when I recently tried to format it on my Windows laptop, I got this error message:
“The disk is write protected.”
I’ve already checked the physical write protection switch on the card — it’s definitely in the unlocked position. Could the card have become corrupted? Is there any way to remove the write protection or fix this?
You can easily remove the write-protection from the SD card using the Diskpart command, Windows Registry Editor or Group Policy. Read this article to learn how to remove Write Protection from an SD card without losing data.
Sometimes the issue is with the reader, not the card. If the reader is old or faulty, it might falsely detect write protection. Testing it on another PC or with a different reader. Then, let us know how it goes.
If your SD card shows a “write protected” error and the lock switch is off, try using diskpart to clear the read-only status. If that doesn’t work, use SD Card Formatter. Test the card in a different reader or device. If it still fails, the card is likely damaged and should be replaced.
