Some tips for a new wireless passport user?

Okay.  I just got my passport and have a few things I can’t find.    Is it possible to set a password for the MPW?  If so, how do I set it?  Also, I think I deleted some of the preinstalled software, I asume I will need it, is there somewhere I can down load it from?  Lastly, think I know the answer to this.  But what format does the media hae to be in for me to stream it?  I have an iPhone 6Plus, and use a mac with yosemite 1010.3.  Thanks.

The only password used on the MPW is the Wi-Fi password. There is no User password, and no user level security.

It depends what you deleted. I can’t check what mine had on it at the moment, but it was basically the Quick Install Guide, User Guide, WD Quick View, and instruction videos, I think. In multiple languages and for Windows and Mac. You can get all those from the WD Support site for the MPW. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?wdc_lang=en&fid=wdsfMP_Wireless

Well, finding the videos is a little harder, but they are on the WD site somewhere, and also on YouTube. See https://www.youtube.com/user/westerndigital/featured or https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwcbXPYucCc0jtWyJtV_Z9cPvPBC5dZt4

You should watch ALL those videos. You will learn lots. Also there are lots of third party reviews and videos worth looking at.

Use the Force Luke, use the Force. . . Oh, wait. No. Use the Support MPW page, and the User Manual. The compatible media formats are in Appendix B of the User Manual.

Searching this user forum would also provide answers about what formats people are using, and lots of other useful information.

Hello, sorrry, but the videos don’t help me.  I am totally blind, and they are just showing graphs, and visual dimenstrations.  I know it is a issue, but could someone give me basic instructions on how to stream video and what format they need to be in?  Do I have to mount this thing to update the software?  copying content to it seems easy enough, I am just trying to stream video to my iPhone 6Plus, while in the car.  Thanks.

I am assuming that you aren’t literally totally blind, since you watched something on your PC, are reading and typing responses. Therefore I think you need to try a little harder to help yourself.

Watch these two videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua6O6DtG5Oo&list=PLwcbXPYucCc0jtWyJtV_Z9cPvPBC5dZt4&index=5

The whole videos. Watch them until you understand them. The displays will be a bit different to what you see on your iPhone 6Plus, but you should be able to understand what is being demonstrated.

Now read the MPW User Manual. Take particular note of appendix B, which tells you exactly which format the videos can be in, when using the My Cloud App to view them.

The manual explains how to update the firmware on the MPW. Update your PC and iPhone software as you normally do.

Sorry, but you are mistaken.  First, I use a mac, not a PC.  Second, I am totally blind.  The mac has a screen reader called “voice over”  And it reads me everything on the screen, including what I type.  Unfortunetly there are some things it does not read.  And PDF’s are one of them.  I will find a sited person to help me.  Since I can’t see the videos.  Thanks.

Okay, that does make it a bit hard and very time consuming to do research then.

I have converted the PDF version of the User Manual to Word format, and placed a copy on my Microsoft OneDrive site, in a Public folder. The conversion seems to be pretty good, so it may help, but a lot of the information is visual, so you may need a sighted person to help anyway.

Here is a link to the Public folder on my OneDrive site: https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=F54C0A6A7F1F0A4F&id=F54C0A6A7F1F0A4F%21129

If you don’t have Microsoft word, you can view the document with Word Online. You can search this document using Ctrl-F just as you would in Word. Here is a link to the document, opened in Word Online:  https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=f54c0a6a7f1f0a4f%21304

To answer at least some of your questions.

Updating the firmware can be done from within the My Cloud App, or the Dashboard, or using an SD card. The SD card method to update firmware isn’t in the manual, but is described at the bottom of this page. Link: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfmp_wireless

You don’t have to mount the MPW to update it. In fact there is no way to update it if it is connected to a computer via a USB cable. The My Cloud App or your Mac when using the Dashboard just need to be connected to the MPW and have access to the internet .

Updating the My Cloud App is done through the Apple Store, just like all other Apps.

The Dashboard is updated when the firmware is updated.

The MPW can play a very wide range of video, audio, and a limited number of image formats to a DLNA client.

The Western Digital My Cloud App can play a more limited range of files. For video on an iOS device such as your iPhone 6Plus they include MOV, MP4, and M4V.

The MPW can serve up a much broader range of video formats to a suitable DLNA capable App. The obvious formats are MP4, M4V, MOV, 3GP, AVI, DivX, Xvid, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, MPG, plus their variants, and a few more.

Providing a simple set of instructions for streaming video from the MPW to your iPhone 6Plus isn’t an easy thing to do, especially as I don’t have my MPW here at the moment. But the basic steps using the My Cloud App are:

  1. Connect your iPhone to the MPW wireless network using the normal iPhone wireless networking functionality.
  2. Start the My Cloud App.
  3. Tap on the name of your MPW, which is near the top of the opening screen of the MPW.
  4. Navigate to the Public folder, and then to the folder where you saved the videos.
  5. Tap in the video you want to watch.

That is the best I can do at the moment. I hope it helps. Maybe someone who has their MPW in front of them can write a better description.

Thanks, that was a huge help, and helped me get started. I will read the user guide, and maybe that will help me with the more advanced features. Again, thanks for your patients.
