Slow and failing file transfers

When trying to copy files from my Western Digital Essentials 500GB USB HDD the transfer speed varies wildly and often fails. I don’t know whether this is an early indicator of a drive failure or simply a configuration issue?

I’ve upgraded the firmware on the device however this has not improved things.

I’m willing to try anything to copy the data off the drive for safe keeping. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Try running a diagnostic with WD DLG. Also if possible try another USB cable.

Unfortunately for me both the short and long tests fail with too many bad sectors. This drive isn’t all that old and wasn’t used much so that’s a bit disapointing.
