I am having no luck booting the CD on a 2011 Mac Mini.
I assume this does not work with the latest Minis? In fact it’s very difficult to get anything (other than OSX and bootcamped Windows) to boot on a 2011 Mini! You can’t even get linux CD’s to boot up without lots of messing about… if at all.
@drlucky No help anymore? As I told you i’m using an intel mac. And that’s not because the CD is booting on other mac that it means that your solution is perfect for everyone. It’s not booting on my mac and as I can see from someone else it’s not booting on a mac mini 2011… So to upgrade my firmware I’ve tested the CD I burnt on an other laptop (windows). And it’s booting on this laptop (meaning I was able to burn correctly the CD). I disassembled once again my mac to take the SSD and put it in an USB case (my windows laptop uses Ultra ATA disk)… The firmware updater is not able to find an SSD in a USB case!!! Very limited. I’m stuck. What can I do then? I don’t have any other computer.
some SATA to USB brigdes (i.e. the USB harddrvie enclosure) are not supported. this is probably why the SSD is not seen. do you have a windows desktop available where you can connect the drive as a sedondary drive? not sure why it is not booting on your MAC i ahve not had any trouble on any MAC I have tried.
I finally used a borrowed computer to change the internal hard drive with my SSD before being able to upgrade. This is way too much complicated and a newbie not confortable enough with computers (and mac are not the most easy ones to disassemble) will never do this. Information is not clear enough to buy at least with the knowledge of the difficulties that might arise. You should at least warn that the updater is not working on every mac.
Thanks, but it’s not a question of the drive not being seen. The utility CD will not boot. I have tried *everything* but there’s no way this will boot a 2011 Mac Mini. So without taking the Mini apart to remove the drive, you are completely stuffed.
I used the terminal commands to enable trim on my MBP 13 under Lion OSX for the Sandisk Extreme. If TrimEnabler isn’t working for you then I would just use the terminal commands to patch your OS.
All TrimEnabler does is patch the system files for you - the same as you are manually doing by using the terminal commands. The good thing about the terminal commands are that all the changes you are making are transparent.
Check out the forums at Macrumors.com for all the many people that have safely done this without incident.
Which Trim Enabler tool are you using and where did you get it from? Enabling Trim on OSX will not impact the SSD at all, it is an OS change and will show up as enabled under About Mac if the drive supports it which this drive does.
By using the terminal method you can see exactly what you are changing and also manually back up the original system files so you can revert back at any time.
By using a downloaded tool to do this instead, you are putting faith in that tool doing what it says it will!
Your post does not address the fact that I already tried putting faith in your method, and it hosed my computer. So you are not really in much of a position to be acting like the expert at this point, and you didn’t give me anything new to try anyway.
Moreover, there is a good chance that updating the firmware fixes more than just this one thing, and therefore SanDisk owes it to us to make a working updater.
the firmware update does not address TRIM not being enabled in MAC. TRIM is disabled by default for all third part SSD in MAC OS. The only way to enable TRIM is to either make the changes in terminal yourself or use a tool that does that for you.
from what I can find the TRIM enabler you are using should not be used on 10.7 since it replaces the extention instead of patching it. below I have linked a TRIM enableler as well as the manula TRIM enable instructions you should be able to use either.
Again the fimrware update does not make TRIM work in MAC. this is a MAC OS settings and enabeling TRIM actually has nothing to do with the drive itself.
The TRIM Enablers don’t work correctly with the version of the firmware that ships with the drive.
I have read that updating the firmware will cause the TRIM Enablers to be effective, but I don’t know for sure because I can’t get the firmware update to work.
I’m sorry, but it is really not helpful for you to post when you clearly don’t understand the question.
I do understand the question and trim enablers do work with the firmware that ships. I have had the drive since release and have had trim working since day one. I am sorry but you obviously do not know what you are talking about. regardless of the tools that do it for you you can always do it yourself. If you do not want to try the suggestion myself and others have suggested fine but I can promise you (if used correctly at least) both the enabler I linked as well as the manual instructions both work. If it is not working for you the issue is you.
We can only give you the facts it is your choice to believe them. TRIM is disabled for all third party SSD in MAC. This is an OS settings and has nothing to do with the drive. The drive supports TRIM in all firmware including the original firmware. The setting has to be changed in the OS so TRIM commands are passed from the OS to the drive. Firmware has nothing to do with being able to change this setting.
Segnerd. You have two people here trying to help you and facilitate you in what you are trying to do and you are shooting us both down. I don’t profess to be an expert but I have achieved what you are trying to do so I do know what I am talking about. Enable trim on mac OS does work with this drive, both with the previous fw and the current one. I have had it workng with both. As we have both said, this OS patching issue to enable trim is purely a software thing and nothing to do with the SSD itself. You are blaming my method for hosing your computer when you used one of the tools to do this whereas I clearly stated I used the terminal method. That is why I asked which tool you used as they are not all the same.
I’m not shooting anybody down, I’m just stating the facts. It has nothing to do with my “beliefs” that the methods you posted don’t work for me, even though I followed all your suggestions and did everything you said correctly, and insulting me isn’t going to change that.
If you don’t have anything useful to post, then please stop the rudeness.
