Sandisk error message

For no apparent reason I am getting “memory card error” message when I switch on camera. I have tried card in a card reader and unable to read and I get message “directory name is invalid”.

I have a significant number of images on the card and do not wish to reformat.

Is there a data recovery tool available or somewhere I can send the card for images to be recovered? Do Leica service offer this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi @alweissberg
You may refer to the below article about the data recovery for flash drive and memory card.

Before rushing to use any data recovery tools you come across, I suggest understanding how to resolve the ‘directory name is invalid’ error first. To fix it, try using a different card reader or testing the memory card in another camera or device to see if it’s recognized. For more fixes, you can grab some coffee to read this article.

Then, inspect the SD card for any physical damage. If you see any, you may need to replace it or send it for manual repair.

Unfortunately, Leica does not provide data recovery services. Common data recovery methods include backup, data recovery software, and data recovery services. If you are looking for a reliable data recovery tool, I suggest you start with those that offer free trials or free versions. (e.g: Recuva, TestDisk, Windows File Recovery)

You should only need data recovery software once in your life. You should learn to backup after that. Pay attention to subscription services offered by commercial data recovery software. Many people don’t realize they signed up for subscription and are charged 3 or 4 times before they are able to stop it. If you call them, they refuse to refund any of your money. (e.g: EaseUS Data Recovery, Wondershare Recoverit)
