Rockbox on the Zip

How is the FM reception with ROCKBox installed?  Any different than the OF?  Has RDS been implemented?

How is battery life with Vorbis?

Thanks!

RDS is not in the main build yet, but fairly close: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/12370 I don’t think anyone has tested battery life yet, but it should be quite good for Vorbis unless theres some bugs.

Lots of people miss some of the information that was on the Clip+ screen, and some have said they have no interest in album art on this 96x96 screen. Well, problem solved!

We really need to get the theme site up and running for the Zip so that people can actually find these themes

OK, so one of the most annoying things about the stock firmware is that when I update the contents of the internal memory (which I do fairly frequently when syncing podcasts), upon disconnecting the Clip Zip it insists on reading the contents of both the internal memory and the external card in order to update its database.  I have a 16GB, nearly fully loaded card in the player, so this update takes a long time.

From my past experiences with Rockbox on other players, I believe that Rockbox would improve this experience due to having a background DB updating process - true?  This is still the case for Rockbox on the Clip Zip?

Thanks in advance.

Yep, Rockbox doesnt suffer the dreaded updating database message.  I installed it a few weeks ago and best thing I ever did.

Its out for the Zip and working great for playback. ITs still under development but does everything I need.

Hey, thanks for your reply.  Funny, I *just* finished testing out Rockbox on my Sansa Clip Zip, when your reply came in.

Good stuff but the USB isn’t working yet (I see there’s a patch, but it appears to be something you apply to source code, and I don’t do builds), so I’m going to hold off until they have a stable release.

There isn’t USB on the Clip+ yet either, and that’s been stable for over a year now.

Ah … well, if they don’t get USB, I can always boot it into the OF to sync files, then power it down during the database update phase (I just tested this and realized it’s possible!) and boot it back up into Rockbox.  Kind of a hassle, though.

Theme site is up for the Zip: http://themes.rockbox.org/index.php?target=sansaclipzip Its a completely new screen size though, so theres only 2 themes at the moment. I’m sure people will make more though as the port becomes more popular.

Those initial themes look pretty good!  Glad to see dfkt  is having some fun with it.

It’s been a while since I experimented with Rockbox on the e200 , nice to have the music database operation in the background.  It’s quite an improvement, being able to listen to some music while new tracks are parsed in the background.

I’d love to have this function with the original FW.

Lads why should i rockbox the zip?i noticed the sound is very low anything i can do to improve it?

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/WhyRockbox Assuming you mean that you’ve got the European volume cap on, yes that doesn’t apply in rockbox (or the sandisk firmware if you change your region).

So I ran a battery bench over night. The music was distributed thusly…
731MB on the internal memory, 29.3GB on a class 4 SanDisk card.

Other assorted settings…ReplayGain was set to track gain if shuffling, clipping prevention enabled, pre-gain set at 4.5db, volume was at -24db, EQ was disabled, playback was set to shuffle all tracks.

Breakdown of content…3,914 tracks, average bitrate of 228kbps, MP3 (96.3%); WMA (3.0%); AAC (0.7%).

Total runtime, 15 hours, 23 minutes, 46 seconds.

I take it the Rockbox developers got the USB connection working, huh? :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems to work pretty well so far, and they’re still fine-tuning it…no more database refresh for me! :smileyvery-happy:

So do the experts think it’s stable enough to try for us mere mortals?  I tried RB on my Clip and did not like the interface; it was too busy looking.  I wanted the darned thing to just play my MP3s but RB was too clutterd in the display and in particular too many layers to get it to play music.  It was stable but irritating (this was about 18 months ago).

You have to find a different theme that is more to your liking. Right now there is only 2 aternatives, but as RB gains in popularity on this player, more assuredly will be written.

Well, the interface hasn’t changed…and there are only a couple of themes available at this point. I think once you get used to it it works quite well, but yes, there’s added complexity to the interface compared to the SanDisk firmware. It’s capable of many things I never do or plan on doing…but I know how to do what I want to do without thinking about it now.

I might suggest waiting a little bit longer for the “average Joe” before trying it, just to be on the safe side, but the port has progressed quickly, given the AMS underpinnings.

Rockbox generally is stable.  But it does have its own quirks–if I recall correctly, battery consumption with the original Clip under Rockbox is higher than with the original firmware (perhaps this has been solved over time?); the use of Rockbox might eliminate the ability to play DRM’ed files with the original firmware, even if Rockbox is eliminated from the player (this may be a big issue for some users); as Rockbox warns, there always is a slight chance of a bricked player, although this seems very unlikely (and it might be more limited to one particular iteration of the Clip player architecture); etc.  Plus, of course, Rockbox did not allow a USB connection to one’s computer–one had to use the original firmware (which one can easily boot into, under Rockbox) for that.

As to the screen, the default screen indeed is utilitarian.  But there are many other options available for screens, as created by users.  Here is a listing of them for the Clip/Clip+ as well as the Clip Zip–almost certainly one will fill needs (and note that some of them replicate the original firmware screen)!  (Note that there are only a few Clip Zip screens, as the player and port are new–more certainly will be coming.)

I like what I see on those new screens (I checked them earlier today) but in the original RB I tried a while back on my v2 Clip (it was an 8GB flavor), I tried several of the interface screens.  What was distracting/irritating was due to the original Clip yellow/blue lettering either letters were too small for my eyes (hitting 50 yrs. old will do that to ya) or split text between yellow/blue.  I knew it didn’t need to be that way since Sandisk could pull it off.  I could never find a display that was as simple/pleasing as what Sandisk pulled off.  Either the display was too busy or split between blue/yellow writing.

I liked the extra features but the dual boot thing was an annoyance; when coupled with the split-screen lettering I just gave up.  With the nicer color screen in the CZ I’ll give it a shot when they go to a stable release.
