I need to update MyBook Elite WD SmartWare, but have concerns. Instructions say:
IMPORTANT: The following precautions should be taken before installing the firmware update.
Before updating the firmware on your drive, make sure you have a copy of all the data on your drive stored on a separate device.
I have 435 GB of free space on my pc, and need to copy/store 333 GB of data from MyBook, to update the firmware. o.O Yes, I am using it as external storage.
Question is, will Acronis allow me to clone and store the external drive? Will I need a full 333 GB of space for it? Has anyone lost data, during a firmware update? Sorry, very new to this. Appreciate any help.
I don’t know if the WD Acronis will work for that or not. People have had their drives corrupted and lost data during firmware updates. If the drive is working without any issues I would avoid the firmware update. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it I did not do the firmware on mine. I also don’t use the Smartware either.
Honestly, if I really don’t need the Smartware/Firmware, I am happy enough, to uninstall it. I do like the diagnostic tools, though.
Even so, I do still need to back up the data. I will try Acronis, and see if it works. If it cannot be done with Acronis, does anyone have a recommendation?
