I trying to upgrade the Smartware software for my WD My Book Elite, the current version of the software is 1.2.0.8 and I downloaded the Smartware updater from wdc.com for upgrading to version 1.3.0.16, but when I run the updater it removes the software from the harddisk instead for upgradering!!. So I have to install Smartware again from the virtual CD on my WD My Book Elite. Are there any solution to upgrade to 1.3.0.16? Please help me. Cheers CLS
I also have the same problem. I hope WD may have the solution for this.
I have the same problem. Running Windows 7 Professional - just updated Smartware for a My Book Elite, and the drive disappeared.
In my case I have a My Book Essential. I think it’s a service WD Shadow that can not running and cancel the upgrade.
Let me tell you guys what I did right off the bat, I didn’t like the software that came preinstalled with this drive at all. So I did what was suggested came here downloaded the newest and greatest SW they had and the firmware as well, Still junk. He don’t even let you decide what you want to back up as far as I could tell, then when you looked at your backup files they were all in some sort of mumble jumble folder names, So I reformatted the whole drive with Win XP and now then all I had on the drive was System Volume Information, And now I just use it as I would any other drive on My PC, And if you really want some backup software there is plenty out there better than what this is, some lamer programer must have drinking when he wrote this stuff. Just a suggestion.

This is a suggestion if that happens, unplug the USB cable from the prot it is in and plug it into another USB port, alot of times that will work with anything that is a USB Device
The problem is WD drive reinstall the version that came with My Book. It´s possible save the new version with the My Book?
I think the WD guys should give same feedback for us, clients , who buy their external drives.
