PC Version of My Passport Essential SE - can I 'Macify' it?

The PC version of this drive is much cheaper than the Mac version. So my question is: if I buy the PC version of the drive. After reformatting it for OSX with Disk utility - can I still make use of the Password protection feature of the drive? If I download the Mac version of the software (VCD Manager for Mac) will it install and work OK?

Another quick question: will the password protection software work on the Elements drives as well (even though they don’t come with it out of the box)?

Nope, even if you find a way to get Smartware to work on the Elements as they are not compatible, it would have the same fate as the MyBook Live (It uses Smartware, but can’t be encrypted because it lacks a VCD).
