Partitioning a HDD without losing data

Thanks to this forum I have already found out that you can partition a drive with 2 different formats - NTFS & HFS+

What I would like to know if it is possible to partition a drive without losing the information on the drive?

I have got a 2TB Western Digital Elements external hdd with 800GB of data I would like to transfer to a Macbook pro.

Is it possible to add a partition on the hdd so I can share 50/50 of the drive between the 2 formats?
