NEW easyStore 18TB Drive Suddenly Not Initialized

NOTHING has happened to this drive - no dropping, banging, being kicked around, badly unplugged, etc. It is less than 2 months old, and I connect it up today and I get (the DREADED) INITIALIZE DISK - select between MBR & GPT. I have tried every possible Partition Recovery software that I can, without success. The system sees it as a WD264D 18TB/16TB drive. If I use WD’s Utlities program, it sees it as a 18TB drive (Model is WDBAMA0180HBK-XA - WD 264D). If I go into DIAGNOSE, “Drive Status Check” returns "SMART status failed. If I select “Run Quick Drive Test”, the button clicks, then does nothing - SAME for “Run Complete Drive Test” - no messages, no errors, no nothing.

Any ideas from the experts? I do NOT want to lose the data on a brand new drive. It is at all possible that the proprietary USB controller became “messed up”? I would certainly rather by a new $40 enclosure than have to lose all my data just to RMA the drive!

Thanks!
