I have been happily using the mybook (WD20000C033-000) on XP Pro for some time (2 years?) without incident using the two 1TB disks in a RAID 1 Mirror. A couple of days ago, the RAID manager started showing a problem whereby it fails to find the device.
The disk itself is fully functional i.e. files can be read and written to the drives. I have since taken a full backup of the 500GB or so that were on it without a problem. I have unplugged, rebooted, reinstalled drives and raid manager and checked device status without finding a problem. I have taken the disks out of the enclosure and mounted the individual disks internally and done a full “extended test” on each without any errors. I then put the unit back together and plugged the USB into a windows 7 box that I had installed the latest RAID manager and the result was identical to that under XP.
So I’m left to believe that the enclosure itself has probably gone bad.
From the searching I have done in this forum and elsewhere, I haven’t seen a post that reports the same sort of thing with the data still being fully accessible.
Any clues on further troubleshooting or ways to confirm the enclosure is dysfunctional?
What happens when I hit the little reset button on the back of the unit? I haven’t tried that yet but I don’t see it documented in the user guides so I’m curious about its function and whether it might be worth a try as I have a full backup.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
