My Passport Ultra detection inconsistency on MacBook Pro

I recently bought a new My Passport Ultra 2TB and formatted it exfat for use on my 2010-era MacBook Pro. I’ve used three different WD Passport external hard drives (both Mac specific versions and PC refromatted versions) up until this point and never had a problem.

But with this new one, every time I restart my computer, the drive is never detected. I will unplug it from the usb and reconnect and it will be detected for a few seconds and then lose connection again.

I have to put my MacBook to sleep mode (by simply closing it) and then wake it back up and connect the drive again to get it to connect and stay connected. I literally have to do this every time after a restart.

Any ideas as to what the issue is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What happens if you exchange the USB 3.0 cable with a regular Micro USB 2.0 cable? Some computers without USB 3.0 ports work better with USB 3.0 devices manually set to work as USB 2.0 mode with a cable exchange.

The connector may seem custom-built at first, but it fits a Micro USB 2.0 perfectly.

thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a regular micro usb 2.0 cable. But I have another WD external passport Elements drive with a usb 3.0 cable and it works fine all the time. When I use the cable from that on this WD Ultra 2TB drive, I still have the same problem.

If so, then I would say this hard drive is not working properly and should be replaced under warranty.
