My Passport Ultra 3TB killed by Windows 10

I bought a My Passport Ultra 3TB in June this year. It has worked faultlessly on Win7. I keep it in a drawer and only use it to backup files, so it’s had light use.

I recently bought a new Win10 x64 machine. When I plugged in the My Passport Ultra 3TB I put in the password for the unlocker and the nothing happened. Clearly this drive doesn’t work on Windows 10. There was no entry in Disk Manager either.

I tried a few more times, and now the drive doesn’t work back in Win7. It spins up, but it’s not recognised by the OS, and after about two minutes it emits a beep. Clearly, plugging it into Windows 10 has killed it.

I was not aware that this product would not work with Win10. What should I do next? Thanks

Hello,

Have you tried formatting the drive?

Thanks. The drive doesn’t appear in Disk Manager at all. I don’t want to format 3TB of personal photos.

The drive was working fine in Win7. Win10 has broken it. Have other WD users been unable to use their products in Win10?

I have My Passport but no the ultra and I also have the same issue. It was fine until I plugged it in to another computer with Win10. Now, I can’t seem to change the permissions. At first I did not see the drive at all when I plugged it back in to my original computer, then something happen after some time of messing with it I was able to see the drive (don’t ask me how I did it as I was messing around with it). But then when I try accessing the drive, I see my documents but can’t do anything with the files. It would give me Access Denied message. I tried to change and take over the ownership but unsuccessful. I am at lost.

I have a solution:

  1. Connect the drive using a USB2 (not USB3) cable
  2. Assuming it gets recognised, now go to device manager and UNINSTALL the device drivers
  3. Now unplug, and try again with the USB3 cable
