Hi. I just bought a brand new WD My Passport Ultra 2Tb. The first day I had no problem, I connected it and it worked, but I made a mistake and I deleted the files that came with the device and I unplugged it, then when I tried to connect it again, id didn’t work. Please any help?? I can see my device when I click the Safely remove device…But I can not see the icon to click to open it.
Thank you.

Hi: I’m nnot sure how you would get the files back that you deletefd, but I would return the drive and get another. These drives are horrible. I have a 1T frive that doesn’t work anymore and i did not delete the software. I tried re formating the drive and it wouldn’t let me. Some how WD has software hardwired, so you have to use their software to operate the drive and when it fails it’s time to throw it in the trash. No one on this forum seems to be able to figure out how to repair “software” errors for these drives, becaise it appears that they can not be repaired. Seagate has the same nonsense with their drives as well, so WD isn’t the only guilty party.

This is false.
The drive can be used without the software as any other external drive.
We understand your frustration and we will like to help you getting this issue resolved.
Have you already contacted WD for support?
They will be able to show you how the drive works and answer any other questions you might have.

You can reload the software that comes with the drive if you want to continue backing up with Smartware.
Follow the steps on the link bellow:

Hi John012
thank you for your help. i tried the steps in that link but nothing works, i mean i installed the drivers, all seems working but i can not see my passport in My Computer to click the icon. Anyway, i will return the device and change it for another one using my warranty. I filled up the RMA form and using the service to return it.
Have a good day

My statement is not false. The drive can not be formated due to WD proprietary nonsense that they have embedded on the drive. I called and they were no help.

Thanks for the advise.

Your statement is false. I just deleted all the files and formated my 2TB WD My Passport Ultra and it works fine both in Windows and in Linux.
