My passport pro with thunderbolt is not backing my mac time machine

i have a My Passport 2TB with Thunderbolt. i have had it barely over a year. it has worked until recently the data transfer rate was very poor, actually the data transfer rate has not been impressive from get go. Now i am trying to backup my data into time machine and its stuck on Preparing backup for hours. This is blinking though but nothing seems to be happening and is should not take hours.

Need help urgently

I would recommend testing the hard drive for errors using both your Mac’s built-in Disk Utility, as well as WD Drive Utilities. I’d also recommend replacing the Thunderbolt cable since interface degradation can affect performance and stability.
