My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB drive always spinning

Hello,

We have a couple of the My Passport SE 1TB external USB drives. We are running them under Windows XP Home and XP Professional.  I would like to find a way to have it so that they are not always spinning. 

I would rather not use the SmartWare software to achieve this as I do not needlessly want to load this software on the PCs. However, if the sleep timer will retain itself after the software has been uninstalled, that is an option.

Is it better to use the power management options of BIOS or Windows XP to reduce power to the Passport devices?

You can use a combination of both

the power management settings will remain even when you uninstall

the changes are done to the drive not the software
