After the latest fw/sw upgrades, 2.010/1.4.1.1 rspectively, my backups stopped and it won’t perform a manual backup. Error I get is “No writable Smarware partition found” In computer management/disk management I see a good partition on the whole disk. Can anyone help?

Thanks to all who viewed my previous post. I reinstalled smartware from the virtual cd and rebooted. It’s working

The SES driver may have been disconnected from the drive when you upgraded the firmware.  So, when you reinstalled SmartWare, you most likely reinstalled the SES driver.

 I bought it in Best Buy , New York, May 2010. I got lured by its slim design and silver color. Unfortunately, I could only load pictures and some music, after that my device was never recognized by any PC or laptop as an external device.

I contacted WD support to report this problem and they provide me a “great” solution by sending  me a cable to try to fix the problem, which was useless in anyway. They told me that they don’t deal with data issues, so they recommend me to contact their Data recovery partner Ontract Data Recovery, which service fees ranges somewhere in $900 - $3500. Really painful to hear that my device cost nothing in comparison with the problem I inherit for buying it. I’m stuck here without knowing what to do, I can’t pay that solution however I refused to lose my data by sending my device to get a changed new one.

I wander if WD is producing defaulty devices that certainly end up on hand of their partners. There would be a mutual benefits for such a partnership.

If they really pledge themselves to be the most preferred external hard driver selling brand in the world then, how can they let their own faithfully customers  be treated that way?

I’m completely disappointed with Western Digital products. After having purchased 02 products that turned out to be a completely disgrace for me.

  • My Book Essential Edition 2.0  Serial Number: WCAUF0974827 Model/Order number: WDH1U6400N: I bought it in a Best Buy in Los Angeles by the end of 2008. I never get to finish a quick and complete data transfer as shown in the advertising, always showing errors, so on and so forth. It has malfunctioned since the very beginning, I never knew who to contact for assistance at first. When I found out how, I realized my warranty had expired. Still seems to work but very unreliable so I’m not using it at all.

I have the same problem and the same degree of disappointment. Worse, WD replaced my drive when it failed after installation of “update” software. I used the replacement without full installation of the software. Then I decided to stop hanging on the fence and let it install. Worked once or twice, then both my computers stopped recognizing the drive. At all.

The drive continues to receive power, with its little light flashing and the drive making its usual little startup noises. 

I deleted the software from the computer using control manager, hoping the computer might then recognize the drive as it asked whether to reinstall the software. Nope. I already had a second WD cable, and of course that was no help at all. 

With WD already having replaced the drive once, I don’t expect much help this time. Instead, I expect to eat this loss and just never buy a WD product again. Ironically, my internal WD hard drives are all fine. But for an external drive, Seagate wins. My Seagate desktop external just cranks right along. 

I wondered if anywhere else, like a local computer shop, could open the box and see if there’s something mechanically/physically visible, fixable problem.

Hi everyone

I wander if you could help me: My Book sounds good and is well recognized by my laptop.

According with my device properties it’s working  properly, I can see my data within I saved long ago  and I can also navigate through it, however I can’t upload and download files anymore having only used 99 GB of 600 GB of the total store capacity. Take ages to calculate the time needed to transfer files then stop working completelly.
I have OS Windows Vista on my laptop. Is It something wrong on my book? I don’t know what else to try to make it work. It last ages to try to copy and paste any file on it.

Has anybody had any clue how to solve this problem?
I’d be trully gratefull.

Did you try different ports or cables on PC? If this is a powered drive try moving the plug to a different outlet.
