I’d like to share my experience of owning a WD My Passport 4TB (model WDBYFT0040BBK). I purchased the device in April 2018, and at that time I was using a MacBook Pro (Mid 2014) with the device. Every worked fine, until later that year, in July, I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro (Mid 2018) with touchbar.
The issue
Almost every single time I closed the lid of my MacBook (which causes the computer to sleep/power nap) every time I then reopened the lid, the MacBook would crash and immediately reboot. MacOS would report a problem had occurred, and then offered to send a crash log back to Apple.
This issue occurs with the most current version of WD utilities and MacOS Mojave 10.14.5.
Steps taken to resolve the issue
I spoke to WD Support who weren’t very helpful in resolving the issue.
The solution
I Uninstalled every single WD application on my MacBook so that not even a trace remained (CCleaner is one tool you can use to do this, available on the Mac App Store). Now the device works fine, and my MacBook no longer crashes when I use the device.
