My Passport 1 TB not detected in PC

I can’t see the device in My Computer. Tried different cables, USB ports and Computers. The LED blinks, and I can vaguely feel the drive spinning(?). The 'Safely Remove Hardware lists this as USB Mass Storage Device without assiging a drive letter. I tried Computer>Manage>Storage>Disk Management. The system asks me to initiate Drive1, and when I click on MBR, it throwas an error: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O Device error”. I also tried reinstalling the drivers, etc. I also ran the UVCView.exe and here is what it says:

Its all Greek & Latin to me though. I don’t see this a disk failure. Perhaps it could be a problem with the USB connections inside the HDD? In that case, what should I do? I got this about a month back in India. Can I approach an authorized service center for it to be fixed, or should I send it for RMA? Please shed some light on this. I’m noob, so please deal with terms appropriately.

Thanks!

Be sure to use the cable that included with the passport, if you use a longer cable it will cause problems. Try using DLG to write zeros. Check the link below for the steps. If that doesn’t work follow the second link for the steps to replace it.

RMA

Hi,

Thanks so much for the reply. I did try WD Diagnostics. All tests appeared 'PASS’ed. I did not try ‘ZERO WRITES’ though. WD Smartware did show my drive, but said something like, ‘the drive has data/format not recognised by Smartware’(not in the exact words though). I suspected it to be a problem with internal circuits because the drive is still shown nameless in my PC, and the LED is blinking and the drive appears to be spinning. Looks like I should send it on RMA. I will try ‘Zero Writes’ just in case.

Oh, and yes, I did use the cable that was supplied with the drive. I also tried other cables (microsd) just to make sure it was not a cable problem. Strange to see the drive dying in a month. Thankfully at least I did not lose too much precious data. And this was my first attempt to have a backup of my data, after having lost many times, in many ways, much more precious data in the past yet not backing up anything.
