My Book for Mac and router hook-up

i just purchesed a 3TB My Book for Mac. I wanted to hook it up through my router’s USB port so that my wife and i can share files and backup our Macs. When I hook it up, the drive is not recognized. By that I mean that the USB light on my router does not come on and the disk is not shown. I have an older WD drive that does not do this. Is the new drive bad? The USB port on the back of the drive seems loose. The On light comes on on the drive, and the drive clicks as though it is working, but I cannot get our Macs to recognize the drives. Can anyone help me?

The drive might need some formatting before connecting to the router

the MB for Mac comes formatted on HFS+J

try formatting on NTFS or check the router manual to see what file system is supported
